· Travel issues this morning with spotty freezing drizzle misty freezing rain for a time northern areas – however spotty.

· Temps climb into the mid 30s spotty light rain showers late morning into the afternoon.

· Conditions get worse tonight along and east of the Green Mountains and somewhat near the Greens across western Vermont – do not travel unless you need to tonight as weather conditions look very treacherous with freezing rain, sleet and wet snow combo.

· Much of this will be elevated just up off the valley floors of eastern ½ of Vermont.

· Conditions do improve with a transition to sleet and wet snow overnight and Wednesday morning but the damage will have been done. There could be up to .3 of glazing.

· The wintry mix to end as wet snow showers and valley sprinkles Wednesday.

· Also of not in the longer range – an Arctic shot setting up below zero nights though nothing extreme but run of the mill into the minus teens to -20 perhaps Sunday night.

· Pick of this week today Monday – temps make a nice climb in some decent sunshine into the mid and upper 30s today – enjoy it because some spotty freezing rain/rain showers roll in for the last part of the Tuesday’s morning commute – Heads Up!.

· Warm intrusion works in aloft with moisture on the increase weak and in pieces, so nothing widespread until Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

· A cold front lower temperatures considerably for Thursday and beyond. Friday might see some minor accumulating snows. But, overall weather pattern quieter late this week with weather systems but intrusion of arctic air (modified) heading into the weekend.

Updated Friday Morning Forecast & WX Notes — December 30th, 2016

· Up-slope component still underway with additional accumulation nestled up against the Green Mountains this morning with the Winter Storm Warning expiring in the afternoon as lighter flurries wind down and then exit this evening.

· Still expect snow coated roads across much of northern and central Vermont and travel could be slick.

· A brief break in the actions will take place overnight into the day Saturday with most of the day forecast to be dry.

· New Years Eve However – another weak weather system will delivers periods of very light snow or flurries and coat up area roads — so please slow down and drive the conditions.

· The best weather comes Sunday – partly to mostly sunny to start the New Year. By Monday an approaching mild intrusion means awful precipitation transitions to rain – worst travel Monday night into Tuesday morning. Temperatures on Wednesday may reach into the 40s topping close to 50 some locations.

· Good news – We have excellent powder – maybe not as much as expected, but at least half of those totals realized. Take advantage snow shoer’s skiers riders and winter sports enthusiasts before the crappy weather hits early to mid week next week.

· Biggest snowfall in couple of years for a lot of us with strong deepening low pressure getting its act together through the day and then hugging the Maine coast tracking toward Houlton Maine. This will put maximum snowfalls across New Hampshire and Maine and but still healthy though more fringe effects of snow in Vermont.

· Heaviest meso-banding likely Connecticut River Valley into the eastern Northeast Kingdom late today and especially tonight.

· As low departs while deepening, winds will kick up newly fallen snows with potential for white-outs across exposed area, but travel will be “snowy” no matter and likely some without snow tires will go off the road and there should likely be many areas at a crawl later today and again tomorrow morning.

· Storms departs conditions improve from south to north, but up-slope component will continue to unload locally heavy snowfall for the central and northern Green Mountains during the storms tail end making skiers and winter enthusiasts extremely grateful.

· Weak frontal system affecting the northern ½ of Vermont with incoming flurries this morning will dissipate out this afternoon for better travel conditions.

· Some roads may become greasy with smidge of snow this morning…traffic areas usually heat up with car tires being warm due to friction, and cause melting of ice and boom you get black ice where tires roll over.

· Great travel weather – this afternoon into Thursday morning commute without any issues.

· Nor’easter on the way for Thursday afternoon into Friday morning . Ball park storm snowfall total 8-15”

· Barre-Montpelier. Burlington 3 to 6” much more near the Greens. Saint Johnsbury 8-15” White River Junction-into central New Hampshire 10 to 20” blowing and drifting was likely exposed areas and all higher terrain.

Whew! Quiet weather now on the way or at least not as unsafe. Watch the sides or shoulders of the roads where there is ice or melting ice.

Your walkways are icy and later tonight when temps go below 32 degrees a dusting to an inch of fluffy snowfall will not adhere to the ice below – use caution as hidden ice with the wrong “footwork” can be injurious.

Best break comes in Wednesday afternoon-night and into the first part of Thursday before snow moves in Thursday afternoon

Upcoming compact – potent Nor’easter — arrives Thursday unloads especially Thursday night into first half of Friday…finishes off with an up-slope component for western slopes of central and northern Greens likely some areas better than one foot! And just in time for New Year’s celebration!!!

Ski areas should be Rockin – fingers crossed this puppy holds true and I think it will several model runs now.
